How Did That happen?

by Cynthia Jennings on October 12, 2022

Life is great! However, there are times when you’re just going along them boom something happens.

That something could be very minor or could be of great magnitude. Nevertheless…. that something that happens can momentarily alter your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual perspective.

My recent “something that happen”, although kinda minor had me on a perspective rollercoaster.

It was a beautiful Saturday evening; my family was attending the wedding of a close family friend. As my grandson and I walked through the reception area to take him to the bridal party photo shoot (yes, he was in the wedding lol), boom I’m on the floor.

Adrenaline was high, all I could initially think of is my grandson okay.

The wedding hadn’t begun yet, so I painfully walk back to the area where my husband was sitting. I slowly raised my dress to expose both bloody knees as well as the gash inside my lip. In a concerning voice my husband asked, “what happened? “Internally shaking, I responded “I fell.”

The wedding was starting soon, so I went to the bathroom to clean myself up physically, emotionally and mentally. I kept angrily repeating in my head, “how did I fall?”

“Suck it up” I told myself. “Don’t let the pain and frustration show in your face.”

The wedding was beautiful and it was fun watching my family and the guest enjoying the reception.

Later that night I was able to assess and clean the wounds. I took a deep breath and audibly thanked God the fall wasn’t worse.

The pain got worse before it got better. And over the course of the week the enemy tried to convince me the reason for the fall was something serious. The enemy wanted me to be distraught about the fall. In the midst of my momentary pity party, I kept hearing “perspective.”

The Lord has sense of humor. Perspective is a word I use often when talking to other women.

As I sat nursing my wounds, the enemy tried once again…I audibly heard, “so you still don’t know how that fall happened?” I smiled, took a deep breath then I audibly said, “it doesn’t matter how the fall happened, what matters is God protected me.”

What could have been a disaster, turned into a praise for God’s protection. God protected me from emotional embarrassment (the reception area was empty barring two people). God protected me from the mental anguish of trying to figure out how I fell. God protected me by not having any debilitating physical harm and more importantly God protected me spiritually from the taunts and lies of the enemy.

We all will have days of “how did that happen.” My day of “how did that happen” was a reminder to ALWAYS look at every situation from God’s perspective. You see no matter how bad it seems, God’s goodness prevails!

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I know unexpected things happen in life. Please show me how to look at the unexpected from your perspective. Give me the courage to boldly rebuke the negative thoughts of the enemy. I ask that the Holy Spirit will remind me of your goodness through glimpses of Your creations and the many blessings you’ve already bestowed upon my life. I thank You for Your protection, I thank You for Your grace and I honor You for who You are in Jesus Name Amen.

PEARLStoPONDER: “How did that happen “can be an opportunity to take a step back to give God glory and remind yourself that God is still in control.

Psalm 34:8-- Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!  Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

1 Chronicles 16:34-- Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalm 100:4-5-- Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

2 Thessalonians 3:3-- But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one

Nahum 1:7-- The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him

Psalm 18:2-- The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
