Meek Does Not Equal Weak

Whispers…”she’s soo meek.” I have heard that phrase oh so often. When I first heard it the manner in which it was spoken clearly had a negative connotation. My initial encounter with this phrase had me question if I wanted this characteristic as a Believer.
Have you ever been referred to as meek and it made you cringe because you don’t want to be viewed as weak? Well, I must admit in times past internally I felt that way until I did a study on meekness to see what Scripture said.
Meek—The adjective meaning: quiet, gentle, easily imposed on, submissive. That’s a good description. However, I like how Matthew Henry describes meek: “Meekness is calm confidence, settled assurance, and rest of soul. It is the tranquil stillness of a heart that is at rest in Christ. It is the place of peace. Meekness springs from a heart of humility, radiating the fragrance of Christ.”
After reading this description some years ago I decided possessing the characteristic of meekness is great. Now when someone sarcastically refer to me as meek, I smile!
My studies led me to a plethora of characteristics of a meek woman. Here are just a few I want to share with you.
A meek woman will be at rest in the storms of life. (Matthew 11:28)
A meek woman will react to circumstances with peaceful trust. (Isaiah 26:3-4)
A meek woman will make life choices based on Scriptural principles. (Psalm 119:105)
A meek woman’s confidence is in the security of the truths of Scripture and the faithfulness of God. (Proverbs 3:26)
A meek woman finds her worth and value in knowing who she is in Christ (Ephesians 1:3-8), and her strength of character in Christ. (Ephesians 5: 8-11)
Meekness is the strength and courage to battle and overcome our own sinful anger and passions, by holding fast to peace through trusting in the providence of God. (Romans 12:18-19)
A meek woman patiently waits to hear the whole matter before reacting. (Proverbs 15:28)
A meek woman is not unemotional, but her emotions are ruled by the Spirit of God. (Proverbs 14:30)
A meek woman forgives quickly. (Matthew 5:23-25)
Meek demonstrates gracious restraint. It responds to accusations or criticism with restraint rooted in humility, by recognizing that without God’s grace, I am capable of far worse than what I am being accused. (1 Peter 3:8-9)
PEARLStoPONDER: Meekness is the most attractive non-clothing article we can wear!
