Jumping Outta Yourself

by Cynthia Jennings on April 21, 2021

“Betcha can’t eat just one.” The Frito-Lay company introduced this best-known slogan in the 1960s. This catchy advertising campaign slogan presents a challenge or maybe even a dare, saying their chips are so good it’s impossible to eat just one.

Some of you are chip lovers. Think about how excited you get when you pull open your favorite bag of chips. The smell, the taste, the crunch, it’s like you’re jumping outta yourself anticipating the pleasure you’ll receive while eating them.

God the Father can offer the same challenge to His children: “Betcha can’t have no joy.” Ok it doesn’t roll off your tongue like the Frito-Lay slogan, but is it true? Do you jump outta yourself when you anticipate the pleasure you’ll receive from praying or reading God’s Word? Do you jump outta yourself when it’s time to serve others. Do you jump outta yourself when put in challenging situations knowing God will get the glory?

As a child of God, we were made for joy. King David tells us so in Psalm 68:3: But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy!”

This joy, this jubilance David describes is reserved for one type of people: the righteous. Do you count yourself among the righteous? Or, do you get lost in your own selfish ways, chasing worldly desires and fleeting happiness? Do you ever find yourself putting all your trust in things you think will bring you joy: professional success, material possessions, family, hobbies, popularity?

Jesus lived, died and rose so we can experience abundant life, a life exuding joy and a life so full that others crave to know the source of that fullness. “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Jesus did not come so we can merely survive life. Pagans can survive life. Jesus came to be our joy!

Unfortunately, some of us have bought into the lies of the enemy, allowing him to steal our joy.

Discouragement, weariness, disillusionment, shattered dreams, and unrealized goals are some of the enemies’ favorite weapons. But the truth is, the enemy can only use what we allow him to use.

Are you still fighting the same battles you’ve been fighting for years? Are you clinging to familiar pain, and trying to find your identity there? Is your joy buried under a mountain of self-sabotaging?

It’s time to reclaim surrendered ground!

Joy is not the result of outward circumstance. Joy is an inside job, a deeply rooted confidence that God is in control.

The Apostle Paul was a man of great joy. By human terms, he had every right to be angry and bitter. Persecuted, imprisoned, and facing his own death. Paul, says Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11-13

Wow!!! Can we learn to be joyful like Paul?

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.” James 1:2-4

We cannot avoid pain, but we can avoid joy. The pursuit of joy is a matter of choice. Our inward perspective doesn’t have to reflect our outward circumstances.

The pursuit of joy is a matter of choice and perspective. It is also a matter of obedience. As Christians one of our spiritual priorities should be joy.

When you choose joy, you will revel in who God is, in what He does, what He is doing and will do in your life.

PEARLStoPONDER: Joy will not come from “speaking it!” Joy comes from a right relationship with God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Father teach me to see my daily life through Your eyes and show me how to live in Your joy.

Proverbs 17:22--A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Romans 15:13--May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope

Galatians 5:22-23--22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
