Spiritual Insomnia
by Cynthia Jennings on May 22, 2019Spiritual Insomnia
Whew, it’s finally over! From the third week in November 2018- the first week in February 2019 (approximately 84 days) I had an experience that shook me to my core. Insomnia!!! I’ve heard of people experiencing insomnia but I had NO IDEA what they really endured. During these 84 days I’m not talking about sporadic sleep, I’m talking my average inconsistent sleep was 1-2 hours per night. During this season my mind began to race, it felt as if I was on a hamster wheel with accelerated speed, and due to the exhaustion, I was physically internally jittery. OH, not to mention the severe under eye dark circles! But I kept pushing through. I was on extreme autopilot going about my days awake and mobile but in a feeling of uncohesiveness.
I realized this ordeal had come to an end when I began to regain strength and restored clarity. The Holy Spirit revealed to me the reasoning behind the insomnia. I clearly heard “I allowed you to experience the physically and emotionally debilitating effects of insomnia as a glimpse of what will happen if you take your eyes off God through His Son Jesus Christ and stop seeking His Word for daily guidance.” “You will be able to function but you will be functioning incoherently due to a convoluted and confused state of mind from a lack of resting in God’s Word and restoration through His Word.” Well that got my attention!
Just like natural insomnia can be detrimental to your physical and emotional well-being due to lack of sleep needed for rest, restoration and rejuvenation of the body. Spiritual insomnia is just as detrimental in it that leaves room for the enemy to whisper lies to you. Thus, blocking or discouraging you from receiving the necessary nutrients needed from God’s word that will provide you with tools for spiritual rest, restoration and rejuvenation.
I must admit I did not enjoy the season of insomnia as a matter of fact I hated this season. However, following every storm there is a cleansing that brings sunshine. I received the cleanse and I thank God that HE loved me enough to send me through the 84 consecutive days of insomnia. If I had not experienced this season, I would not be able to share this blog with you in hopes of helping someone who may be in that season with the gamut of feelings that come along with it to let them know this too shall pass. Towards the end of that season, I did a lot of praying or should I say kneeling because most days my mind was to convoluted to put together a prayer. But I thank God for The Holy Spirit who intercedes on my behalf!
PEARLStoPONDER: No matter how bad the season looks, there is always a something bright peeking through.
Psalms 4:8 - I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
Proverbs 3:24- When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
